Trohpy
Trophy, 2009. Cast bronze, 24 crt gold
My grandmother had an umbilical hernia for years. This is a weakness in the muscle walls that hold everything in place underneath your skin; your belly button from your umbilical cord is a weak area. It's a belly button which is an outie, slowly expanding.
It's wrong, and beautiful and precious - I would shower my grandmother ever week and so I cast it. This is the strip of skin from back to belly, a full circumference. She would refer to it as my trophy, as joke on her and myself; if only I would do something beautiful.
This was in a strange and lovely exhibition with Lou Hubbard at a gallery that no longer exists.
My grandmother had surgery and is fine.
